Here is just a sampling of the great line-up of events in store at the 2017 Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. From field trips and films, to family events and artist workshops - there is a little something for everyone!

Bird Fest Central

Friday, May 19 - Sunday, May 21

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Bird Fest Central is located at the Wenatchee River Institute @ Barn Beach Reserve, a 9-acre nature preserve on the banks of the Wenatchee River in Leavenworth, Washington. It is the heart of the festival, and your source for all things Bird Fest. Register, check-in for field trips, grab a program, pick-up a birding checklist, and get your questions answered. Drop by on Saturday and check out the Family Discovery Center and Migration Marketplace. Be sure to also leave time to explore the adjoining Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island - a popular stop on Audubon's Great Washington Birding Trail.

A Birder's guide to everything

Thursday, May 18

7:00 pM @ Snowy Owl Theater

After enjoying a delicious dinner at one of our many Bird Fest sponsors in Leavenworth, kick off Bird Fest with a cinematic experience at the Snowy Owl Theater ! This independent film starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alex Wolff and Sir Ben Kingsley, two teenage birders set out to find a (possibly) extinct Labrador Duck, but discover a great deal more along the way. David Portnoy, a 15-year-old birding fanatic, thinks that he's made the discovery of a lifetime. On the eve of his father's remarriage, he escapes on an epic road trip with best friends to solidify their place in birding history.

Sketch and study birds with expeditionary artist Maria Coryell-Martin.We will hone our observation skillsand practice techniques for expressive ink and watercolor as we create a series of postcards. All levels welcome! Lunch from the delectable Lokal is included.


Casual Friday

Friday, May 19th

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Kick off Bird Fest with Casual Friday inside the River Haus at Bird Fest Central on the Wenatchee River Institute campus. Grab a beverage from the no-host bar, some tasty snacks prepared by Lokal, and chat it up with other birders - including a meet & greet with Keynote Speaker, Clay Taylor.  Relax and enjoy the afternoon with Mary Lou Sinelli performing 'CROW: A short reading and dance choreography'.

Birders' BBQ & Keynote Address

Saturday, May 20

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM (Birders' BBQ)

7:30 PM - 9:00 PM (Keynote Address)

Enjoy a home-cooked BBQ and live music among the pines at Red-Tail Canyon Farm - a working draft horse ranch. Stick around and enjoy this year's keynote, Clay Taylor! “Many birders will tell you that being a “birder” and “bird photographer” are mutually exclusive – you can’t be successful at both. " Well, Clay, who works for Swarovski Optik and has 40 years experience is here to tell you otherwise!


family Discovery Center

Bring the kids to the Family Discovery Center at Bird Fest Central on the Wenatchee River Institute campus! Enjoy free family events including amazing front-row interaction with live raptors courtesy of Sarvey Wildlife Care Center (11:00 am), Leave No Trace Snack class (12pm), hands on activities for the kids, nature walks, and indoor archery!

Migration Marketplace

Saturday, May 20

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Drop by Bird Fest Central at Wenatchee River Institute and check out the Migration Marketplace! Find quality products and interactive exhibits related to birding, natural history, and outdoor pursuits.


Song Bird Concert

Saturday, May 20

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join the Marlin Handbell Ringers, outstanding musicians blend and soar the 108 bells as many hands blend a single musical message. The Song Bird Concert at the Snowy Owl Theater can be enjoyed after the bilingual nature walk at 2pm on the Sleeping Lady grounds.

The Leavenworth area features spectacular habitats ranging from snow-capped mountains and sunny ponderosa pine forests, to lush riparian zones and shrub-steppe habitat. Get out and explore in one of the over 40 field trips being offered. Stroll, bike, boat, and bus through spectacular landscapes and learn from experts excited to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for birds and our area with you!
